The Town Seal
The seal for the Town of Dayton was designed by Emily Cole and drawn by Dorothy T. Cole, both residents of Dayton. The two wild boars’ heads are taken from the Coat of Arms of the Gordon Family, who were the first to settle in this town. Their motto “Forward, without Fear”. The gold star on a field of blue was taken from the Coat of Arms of the Day family because according to tradition the town was named after Thomas Day.
The chevron on the shield and the lozenges behind the shield were taken from the Coat of Arms of the Gorges family, Sir Ferdinando Gorges, having been granted the Province of Maine by James I, King of England in 1622
